Coleman put the medications on the desk and double-checked the lock on his office door. He went over to the sink in the corner and slit a hole in Hyperion’s IV bag and watched the infusion go down the drain. Then, he opened the bottom drawer of his filing cabinet and retrieved a full IV bag of saline and transferred the label from the empty bag. He went to his desk and opened the equine osteoarthritis study data file on his computer. The spreadsheet filled the screen.

He looked at the entries and their drug codes and opened the box of vials. He separated them into two groups based on the data results. The actual key for the treatment groups was kept in the pharmacy department locked in a filing cabinet. But Coleman was pretty certain which vials contained the arthritis medication and which contained the placebo. It was obvious from the results. After sorting the vials, he took a sixty-milliliter syringe fitted with a twenty-gauge needle and filled it with the medication from the vials in the treatment group. He figured dosing with this amount of the anti-TNFα medication three times, forty-eight hours apart, should shut down the horse’s immune system beyond repair. He held up the IV bag and rubbed his thumb over the label to keep the edge from peeling up. He injected the anti-TNFα medication into the bag and mixed the solutions. Coleman refilled the vials with saline, placed them back in the box, and put the syringe in his pocket. He’d dispose of it in a sharps container in the clinic. He threw the packaging from the syringe and alcohol swabs in the trash and walked to the inpatient ward. Coleman smiled. He was on a mission of mercy.
